Dante (aka Charlie V. Martin)
And a very special thank you to our friends at the Leicester Square Theatre. They are the very best.
And just for good measure, here are some photos of last Thursday’s wonderful evening!
Last night, the Leicester played host to a handful of comedians, a full house of audience and four episodes of Dead Drunk Detective: Live in the Rotten Flesh!
We had an absolutely marvellous time. Georgie Morrell made us laugh and played with our emotions, Dante sprung back and forth for and taught us the importance of home to an exile, and Rich Spalding gave us some spoken word work before revealing the quandaries of a middle-class northerner. Thank you to all of the audience that came along for the show.
DON’T FORGET! We are back at the Leicester Square Theatre on THURSDAY 28th SEPTEMBER to record the rest of the series as well as performances from Katie Pritchard, Melanie Gayle and Bentley Browning, so don’t miss out.
And just for good measure, here are some photos of last night’s wonderful evening!
Season 2 of Dead Drunk Detective is on its way soon! Returning to the show are all the key cast and crew of Season 1, including Arfie Mansfield as Det. Johnny Stumbles, Kate Oswald as the long-suffering Betty, Leanna Wigginton as Johnny’s sister Melissa and show-writer Brendan Way.
This season, Johnny takes on foes and allies, old and new, in the next adventures of the undead private detective to be recorded Live in the Rotten Flesh. And not just at any venue. Season 2 will be recorded in the Leicester Square Theatre, home of some of London’s finest comedy podcasts, stand-up performances and plays.
We could not be more thrilled to return to our favourite monstrous neighbourhood and all its infernal inhabitants, and we’re dead excited to be recording it at the pillar of the comedy community that is Leicester Square Theatre.
You can come and see Dead Drunk Detective: Live in the Rotten Flesh at the Leicester Square Theatre on Friday 8th September and Thursday 28th September.
Podcast Adventures is excited to announce a second series of the comedy-noir podcast sitcom Dead Drunk Detective in 2017.
Arfie Mansfield and Kate Oswald will return as scotch-fueled, zombie detective Johnny Stumbles and his long-suffering assistant Betty in the Autumn.
Also returning to the cast will be Leanna Wigginton as Johnny’s sister Melissa and a host of new characters and special appearances from the London improv comedy community.
Writer Brendan Way says he had a blast writing season 2 of the show and is looking forward to experimenting with the weird world he’s created: “The biggest change in the first run had been – SPOILER ALERT – Betty getting a new chair. This time round, I wanted to shake things up. I’ll bring back some old friends, but also introduce new enemies. Let’s get in people from Johnny’s pre-zombie life. OOH! Let’s have Johnny question his entire identity.”
Season 2 has a few surprises in store for Johnny as we find out more about the land of the undead and explore his tricky relationships, all presented with the same relentless pun-a-minute treatment.
Dead Drunk Detective was born when Way was bored one afternoon. Months later it was a fully produced live show and series starring a cast of talented friends. As with the first season, a series of live recordings will take place in a Central London performance space for which a limited number of tickets will be released in September.
Podcast Adventures is a London-based audio network producing podcast titles in collaboration with writers and performers across the UK. They are also behind titles such as Sketch, Please! and Ed and Friends, with another comedy sitcom to be announced later this year.
Every episode of Dead Drunk Detective is in the can! Goodness gracious.
The process has been a long labour of love since Brendan Way (actor, writer, man with jokes) approached me with some scripts he had written for a lark. Then started the hard yet hugely fulfilling hard work of recording them live for which we had no money and really only the generosity and hard work of friends old and new and indeed ourselves. And for that reason, there are some people that deserve a big congratulations and and even bigger thank you for helping us one this endeavour.
Firstly, our cast. Some playing recurring roles that carried through the entire series, others that played several roles a night in delightful character parts, and there were some that came, performed a small but vital role and dropped the mic in fantastic fashion. Namely, they are:
And they were not the only performers that worked on our live shows. We had a collection of truly marvellous stand-ups and character comedians that warmed up our audiences before we recorded each episode. They did the heavy lifting so that our work was that much easier, and for that, we are incredibly grateful. That, and they were all incredibly funny to boot.
Charlie Martin a.k.a. “Dante”
And none of this would have been possible without somewhere to record the show. I would like to reiterate, we had no budget. But we needed a venue that; a) was the right size, b) technically capable of pulling it off, c) soundproof, d) comfortable for the audience, e) was actually staffed by nice and supportive people that were willing to support an endeavour like this. And when we found The Actor’s Temple, we knew we had found just the people to help us make this thing. They have been so incredibly supportive of us and all that we have asked of them in bringing Dead Drunk Detective to life, and always treated us with kindness and understanding. Huge thank you to Tanya and the gang.
And really the work is still only half done. Katharine Kerr, our producer and editor will be in the edit suite building the final episodes as she has for every episode so far. And indeed before every episode as she prepared our sound design for each live show. But more than that, she has been our stalwart and dependable pillar of audio production that has been the rock and foundation upon which this whole thing has been made possible.
And making us look fantastic in all of this are two people that have applied their own very specific set of skills in delightfully artful ways. The first we should mention is Aimee Sajjan-Servaes, who created some truly sticking illustrations for our cover art, somehow bringing compassion to a zombie with barely any flesh left on the bone. The other is Tom Hodge, who composed our theme music that hit the smokey noir tones with just the genre notes in all the right places. These guys not only helped us, they blew us away.
And finally, there’s the creator of this entire pocket universe we have been inhabiting for months. Brendan Way entrusted us with his baby, and engaged in a creative partnership with Katharine and I that has borne fruit as Dead Drunk Detective, a podcast sitcom. And regardless of what happens, whether it has a second series, or disappears in to the obscure corners of the internet… we bloody made it! It exists now! We have proof. And some of these creative endeavours never get past the first draft, but this one will live on. And the reason why is because Brendan was imaginative enough to create this world, was confident enough to pursue finding a platform for it, and was proactive enough to follow through this to completion and help in every way he possibly could.
And lastly, the people that came to our live shows, listened to our podcasts, subscribed on iTunes and Soundcloud (still can by the way) and are following Dead Drunk Detective on its journey. Thank you so much and PLEASE CONTINUE TO DO SO! The Finale Double Bill comes out on Monday 31st October! HALLOWEEN for heaven sake! If you are playing audience to Dead Drunk Detective in any way, thank you! We will be fighting to earn your continued support at every point!
It’ll be strange once Dead Drunk Detective is all finished and released. It has occupied an important part of our lives for some time. But with luck, it will rise from the depths again in the near future!
Until then, stay drunk and fighting crime, alive or dead!
Producer on Dead Drunk Detective
The first Dead Drunk Detective: Live in the Rotten Flesh was an absolute delight! We had a lovely audience full of friendly faces. Our stand-up performers Matthew McAloone, Sean Sellers and Wayne Lawrence charmed the audience with their winning repartee, and then the show began. It was a brilliant night.
If you would like to join the audience for the next recording, you can get your free tickets from our Billetto page.
This Saturday, a merry of band misanthropes will perform Dead Drunk Detective episodes 1 to 3 in front of a live audience at The Actor’s Temple on Warren Street. And in preparation for this, Podcast Adventures hosted a delightful sit-down read through of the marvellous scripts written by Brendan Way.
There was pizza. There were drinks. The cast that we have assembled is such a wonderful bunch of goofballs, each one as eager to make each other laugh as to help each other get laughs. we can honestly say that whatever the podcast turns in to in the end, the process is going to be made so very enjoyable by this lovely bunch.
Expect to see more than a few costumes on display when we take to the stage this Saturday. Tickets are FREE, so check the details at our Live in the Rotten Flesh Page and prepare for a show that will steal your heart and braaaaains…
Podcast Adventures is producing its first radio serial. Dead Drunk Detective is a supernatural ‘radio’ noir starring a zombie private detective, and we had the writer of the show in the studio to chat about it.
Brendan was backing up his computer when he pulled up an old script he had written a few years ago and from there, he wrote an entire series and sent it over to us at Podcast Adventures! And now the show will be coming to life in front of a live audience.
If you would like to be in the live audience on Dead Drunk Detective, check the details on our Live In The Rotten Flesh page. Here are the dates:
Saturday 24th September 2016
