Ed & Friends dug themselves out of the snow in New York and spoke to Video Game enthusiast and YouTuber Lee Stapleton a.k.a. IAmStapesy!
Lee Stapleton, or Stapesy, trained as a filmmaker with Ed before entering the film industry. A suspension from work meant that Lee had a bit of time on his hands and found himself a part of three-man YouTube Channel Armed With Controllers before moving to New Zealand and starting IAmStapesy. Ed and Lee have slap-dash catch up via Skype and chat about “Let’s Play” videos and even try to sell movie plots to each other in the game “Elevator Pitch”!
This week on Ed & Friends, Ed has a very special guest in the form of filmmaker, improviser and puppeteer, Mike Hutcherson.
Proof that Mike can make a puppet out of anything.
Since watching Labyrinth as a child, Mike’s interests have been three-fold: comedy, story-telling and puppetry. As a student, Mike learned about narratives, mythology and theatre. As a man he has juggled filmmaking and puppeteering careers that have taken him everywhere from Disney to his own improv troupe Glitch – The Improvised Puppet Show. Ed and Mike chat about it all, with more than a few laughs on the way.
DISCLAIMER: By virtue of talking about Labyrinth as much as we do, we talk a bit about the beloved and recently departed David Bowie. The recording itself took place a week before his death, but we kept this segment in as we felt that it paid tribute to his work and his person in a way that inspired us as children and still inspires us today.
2016 is here and Ed & Friends kicks off with a with a special bumper edition, half interview and half movie review!
Ed had not seen James Alexander-McInnes for ten years before he bumped straight in to him at Secret Cinema: Empire Strikes Back, so Ed invited Jamie on the podcast and they caught up with life and the actor’s process, particularly in the unique format that Secret Cinema provides.
Secret Cinema is a primarily London-based phenomenon that Jamie has worked on since 2010. They invite you to films without telling you what you are going to see, but they take you in and through the world of the movie. For Shawshank Redemption, they sent the audience to prison. For Bugsy Malone, they were invited to Fat Sam’s Speakeasy. But 2015 was the year that Star Wars returned, not just because of enormously successful release of The Force Awakens in cinemas. Secret Cinema recreated the planet Tatooine, the Death Star, the whole environment of A New Hope in a South London Warehouse for people to experience before watching The Empire Strikes Back. It was incredible. And Jamie was part of it!
We talk to Jamie about being a lifelong Star Wars fan and how it felt to live the Star Wars dream for 60 days! Ed and Jamie then talk at length about the plot of The Force Awakens after about 30 minutes, so SPOILER ALERT!
Ed & Friends is back for 2016 on Saturday with a fun-filled show featuring Secret Cinema character actor James Alexander McInnes.
As well as being an old friend of Ed’s, James lived a Star Wars dream all summer playing Greedo amongst other characters at Secret Cinema Presents: The Empire Strikes Back where he quite accidentally bumped in to Ed in-character! It was only a matter of time before he appeared on Ed & Friends.
